WHAT KEEPS ME STANDING?

📖 Memory Verse (ESV): "God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape." — 1 Corinthians 10:13

A well-built house has stood through many seasons. The walls are freshly painted, the roof strong. Neighbours say it will never move. But the long rains have been seeping quietly under the foundation for weeks.

A father waits until the house is quiet and everyone is asleep. Then he opens a screen he would never open in front of them. He is still a good man in the day. He is a different man in the dark. What he hides is not standing still — it is soaking into the ground under his prayers.

The walls look strong. But strong walls cannot save a house whose ground is quietly giving way.

The night Jesus was arrested, He warned Peter, "You will fall away." Peter answered, "Even if everyone else falls away, I never will. I will die with You." Hours later he stood at a fire in the high priest's courtyard. A servant girl looked at him and said, "You were with Jesus." Peter said, "I do not know Him." He said it three times. Then a rooster crowed, and Jesus turned and looked at him. He went out weeping. Later, by another fire, Jesus asked three times, "Do you love Me?" — and restored his calling. One who thought he stood, fell. Jesus lifted him.

Paul reminds Corinth that Israel walked with God. They passed through the sea, ate manna, drank from the rock. Yet many fell into idolatry. Their story was written down, Paul says, so that we might learn from it. He warns, "Let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall." Then he gives a promise: no temptation is beyond what others have faced. God is faithful, and when temptation comes, He will make a way of escape.

Where is the softening ground under our own walls this week? A student has held their line for a whole semester, and today one exam pressure whispers that copying just once will not matter. A brother has walked a whole year clean, and today he stands one drink away from losing every step. A church elder carries a heavy secret he has never spoken aloud. A young couple who once prayed together now barely finish a sentence before an old wound flares. Yet the same God who lifted Peter is faithful still. His way of escape is often a small door — a friend called at the right hour, a step out of the room, a whispered prayer. One look from Jesus turned Peter home.

🤔 Did You Know: On the night Peter denied Jesus, he warmed his hands at a charcoal fire in the high priest's courtyard. When the risen Jesus met him again by the Sea of Galilee, Jesus had lit another charcoal fire on the shore. These are the only two charcoal fires named in the whole New Testament. At the very kind of fire where Peter had denied Him, Jesus welcomed him back.

💭 Personal Reflection:

1. Peter thought he was the strongest disciple in the room. What is the area of your life today where you feel most sure of yourself — and what would it look like to invite God to check the ground under it?

2. When was the last time you sensed a "way of escape" God quietly offered you — a small interruption, a wise friend, a change of plans — and how did you respond?

3. If you could take one small step this week to protect the ground under your walls (a boundary, a prayer, a friend, a habit you set aside), what would it be?

🙏 Prayer: "Father, I am not as strong as I sometimes think. Show me the softening ground under my walls. When temptation comes, open Your small door of escape and give me eyes to see it. Thank You that You lift the one who falls. Amen."
